Incircle Radius of Triangle

CAT 2024 Slot 2 · QA · Easy · Coordinate Geometry

The coordinates of the three vertices of a triangle are: (1,2)(1, 2), (7,2)(7, 2), and (1,10)(1, 10). Then the radius of the incircle of the triangle is

Answer

2

Explanation

Let vertices be A(1,2)A(1,2), B(7,2)B(7,2), and C(1,10)C(1,10).

  • ACAC is vertical of length 102=8|10 - 2| = 8.
  • ABAB is horizontal of length 71=6|7 - 1| = 6. Since ACAC is vertical and ABAB is horizontal, A=90\angle A = 90^\circ.

So ABC\triangle ABC is a right-angled triangle with perpendicular sides a=6a = 6 and b=8b = 8. Hypotenuse c=62+82=10c = \sqrt{6^2 + 8^2} = 10.

Inradius r=a+bc2=6+8102=2r = \frac{a + b - c}{2} = \frac{6 + 8 - 10}{2} = 2.
