A man takes 5 hours to walk to a certain place and returns by car. He would have, however, gained 3 hours if he had completed his entire journey by car. How long would he have taken to walk both ways?

Explanation

Let time to walk one way = WW, time by car one way = CC. W+C=5W + C = 5 hours. Car both ways = 2C=5−3=22C = 5 - 3 = 2 hours ⇒C=1\Rightarrow C = 1 hour. W=5−1=4W = 5 - 1 = 4 hours. Walking both ways = 2W=2×4=82W = 2 \times 4 = 8 hours.
