CAT 2022 Slot 1 · QA · Easy · Ratio and Proportion

A mixture contains lemon juice and sugar syrup in equal proportion. If a new mixture is created by adding this mixture and sugar syrup in the ratio 1:31 : 3, then the ratio of lemon juice and sugar syrup in the new mixture is

  1. A.

    1 : 6

  2. B.

    1 : 4

  3. C.

    1 : 5

  4. D.

    1 : 7

Answer

D

Explanation

Let the quantity of the original mixture taken be 22 units. Since lemon juice and sugar syrup are in equal proportion in the original mixture:

  • Lemon juice =1= 1 unit
  • Sugar syrup =1= 1 unit

Now, new mixture is created by taking original mixture and sugar syrup in the ratio 1:31 : 3. So if 22 units of mixture are taken, we add 2×3=62 \times 3 = 6 units of pure sugar syrup.

Total lemon juice in the new mixture =1= 1 unit. Total sugar syrup in the new mixture =1+6=7= 1 + 6 = 7 units.

Ratio of lemon juice to sugar syrup in the new mixture =1:7= 1 : 7.
